Today sucked

So it snowed like 8 inches. All the schools in staten island are closed, even the colleges, but of course the ones in brooklyn arent. so i take an hour and a half trip to school only to find out my 2 classes are cancelled. then i took another hour trip home and then i had to shovel for like 2 hourse =(

oh and when i was getting on the subway, the doors almost closed on me wtf. why cant doors be like the ones on the elevators and not close on people

I was gonna go to Columbia or NYU med school in NYC, but the subways can smell like urine sometimes. I'd hate to have to commute everyday too. The main reason I stayed in NJ was the $$$ reasons Is it expensive to get to and from your school?

it would have been cool to study in Amerikah (pronounced like eddie murphy in coming to america), but in the end i figured it would cost me like... $150,000. as we don't have this "saving up for college money from the second yo baby is born" mentality/system ovah here, it's kind of difficult to get hold of that much money.

Yeah I did, but it was only for the MD program. I got into the MD/PhD program at the NJ Med school. I choose NJ b/c that program is fully funded by the government. I don't pay tuition, fees, or for my own medical insurance, plus they pay me to work in the lab for credit. I would have went to school in NYC in a heartbeat if it was free

in england the tuition fee is like 3k a year so once we leave we will be 9k in debt but we dont have to start paying back till we are earning over 15k

and in scotland.. ITS FREE!

they charge almost $700 a unit.
i have to take 48 units in total

OMG... Free college was my goal in life. I know people that are $200,000 + in debt from school. The US sucks at making things accessible to everyone, they really like to push the "have and have nots" theme

chantal, the $150,000 fee was for international students at NYU. i believe domestic students have like 50% "discount", or more. maybe even 75%. but still it costs a shitload of money. i think the system in UK is similar to the one in sweden. you take student loans, right? however, you do have an annual fee of like £3,000, right? in sweden university studies are free. braggety brag brag.

i think it's SOOO fucking sick that college/uni costs so much in the US. sure, it's an investment for life, but what the heeeell are you supposed to go bankrupt??

Not bankrupt, but indebted to the point where they pretty much own you. They have other programs where the government will pay for med school, but then they own you for a certain amount of years after you graduate. It's sick.

aw man that sucks. now i shouldn't be dissing your system, because you're the ones living in it, thus you're the ones who can really complain about it. and... swedish universities aren't really as renowned as the american ones hahahahahaha

i'm never going to get loans to pay for college.
i'll just get grants and scholarships and pay with my own money

if you don't have the money student loans are pretty rad.. at least compared to regular loans. the interest rate (is that what it's called? i just looked it up in a dictionary) is normally much lower.

The loans aren't so bad, its just that it accumulates over the time spent in college. Each year they give you a new loan, and the interest rate can vary. Sometimes you don't even qualify for the best loans either. Student loans aren't the best choice, grants and scholarships are way better.

yeah, then in your system grants and scholarships are clearly the better option. indeed. we don't really have many grants and scholarships. it's like 1% of students know of their existence. socialist country personified lol.

i had a good day. my boyfriend and i went to file his taxes and found out he is one of like 50,000 people who qualify for an extra $500 on his return. effin' sweet. so we went to the mall to jobhunt and 3 places i would actually like to work at are highering, so we grabbed applications for that. and then we ate at Casa Ole.
